1.ความหมายของคลื่นสึนามิ
คลื่นสึนามิ (tsunami) หมายถึง คลื่นซึ่งเคลื่อนตัวในมหาสมุทรด้วยความเร็วสูงมาก และมีพลังรุนแรง สามารถเคลื่อนที่ไปได้เป็นระยะทางไกลๆ เมื่อเคลื่อนที่เข้าสู่บริเวณชายฝั่งจะทำให้เกิดเป็นคลื่นขนาดใหญ่มาก ที่เรียกกันว่า คลื่นยักษ์ ก่อให้เกิดความเสียหายอย่างใหญ่หลวงต่อชีวิต และทรัพย์สินของผู้คน ที่อาศัยอยู่ตามบริเวณชายฝั่ง คลื่นชนิดนี้จึงแตกต่างจากคลื่นธรรมดา ที่เกิดจากแรงลม พัดผ่านเหนือพื้นผิวน้ำในท้องทะเล คำว่า tsunami มาจากภาษาญี่ปุ่น แปลว่า คลื่นอ่าวจอดเรือ (harbour waves) ทั้งนี้ เนื่องจาก บริเวณชายฝั่งของประเทศญี่ปุ่น ที่เป็นอ่าวจอดเรือทางด้านมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก มักได้รับภัยจากคลื่นชนิดนี้อยู่บ่อยๆ จึงเรียกชื่อเช่นนั้น ต่อมาชื่อนี้ได้นำไปใช้แพร่หลายจนเป็นที่เข้าใจกันโดยทั่วไป สำหรับประเทศไทย ราชบัณฑิตยสถานได้บัญญัติศัพท์ของคำว่า tsunami เป็นภาษาไทยว่า คลื่นสึนามิ(อ.ดร.เครือวัลย์ จันทร์แก้ว)
