ด้วยพระมหากรุณาธิคุณดังกล่าว ในปี พ.ศ. 2416 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้หล่อพระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว 4 พระองค์ ได้แก่ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เพื่อประดิษฐานไว้ให้พระมหากษัตริย์องค์ต่อมา พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ ข้าราชการ และประชาชนได้ถวายบังคมระลึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณเป็นธรรมเนียมปีละครั้ง และโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้อัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานไว้บนพระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาท แต่มีการย้ายสถานที่ในการประดิษฐานหลายครั้ง เช่น พระที่นั่งสุทไธสวรรยปราสาท และพระที่นั่งศิวาลัยมหาปราสาท เป็นต้น ต่อมาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงโปรดให้ย้ายพระบรมรูปมาไว้ ณ ปราสาทพระเทพบิดร ในวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม พร้อมกับพระบรมรูปของรัชกาลที่ 5 พระบรมชนกนาถ
จนกระทั่ง ในเดือนเมษายน พ.ศ. 2461 การซ่อมแซมก่อสร้างและประดิษฐานพระบรมรูปทั้ง 5 รัชกาล จึงสำเร็จลุล่วง และได้มีพระบรมราชโองการประกาศตั้งพระราชพิธีถวายบังคมพระบรมรูป ในวันที่ 6 เมษายนปีนั้น และต่อมาโปรดฯ ให้เรียกวันที่ 6 เมษายนว่า “วันจักรี”
