งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสะท้อนการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคมเกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมอาหารในงานประเพณีต่างๆของประชาชนในจังหวัดพัทลุง ซึ่งมีแนวโน้มของการได้รับอิทธิพลภายใต้การเปลี่ยนแปลงของสภาวะเศรษฐกิจและสังคมในปัจจุบัน ผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพ(Qualitative research) ลงพื้นที่เก็บข้อมูล ใช้การสังเกตและการสัมภาษณ์เป็นหลักพบว่า งานประเพณีหลักๆในจังหวัดพัทลุงประกอบด้วย งานแต่งงาน งานบวช งานศพ งานทำบุญขึ้นบ้านใหม่ รวมถึงงานวัดและงานบุญประเพณีอื่นๆ และเกิดมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอาหารที่ใช้งานประเพณีหรือที่คนพัทลุงเรียกว่า “แกงงาน” ตามกระแสสังคมที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปอย่างรวดเร็ว โดยมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงในรูปแบบผสมผสานให้สามารถปรับตัวอยู่ร่วมกันได้ระหว่าง “แกงงาน” ในวิถีแบบเก่ากับอาหารในวิถีแบบใหม่ภายใต้การเปลี่ยนแปลงของสภาวะเศรษฐกิจและสังคม
