วันตำรวจของไทย ตรงกับวันที่ 13 ตุลาคม ของทุกปี เนื่องจากวันที่ 13 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2458 เป็นวันประกาศรวม "กรมพลตระเวน" กับ "กรมตำรวจภูธร" เป็นกรมเดียวกัน เรียกว่า "กรมตำรวจ" (ในภายหลังได้เปลี่ยนเป็น "สำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ") กรมตำรวจจึงถือเอาวันที่ 13 ตุลาคมของทุกปี เป็น "วันตำรวจ" โดยมีการประกอบพิธีในวันตำรวจอย่างเป็นทางการครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ 13 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2492 ซึ่งขณะนั้น พล.ต.อ. หลวงชาติตระการโกศล เป็นอธิบดีกรมตำรวจ

ในส่วนของนักเรียนนายร้อยตำรวจ และนายตำรวจปกครองของโรงเรียนนายร้อยตำรวจ ได้กระทำพิธีถวายสัตย์ปฏิญาณตนต่อธงชัยประจำหน่วยตำรวจ และสวนสนาม ภายในโรงเรียนนายร้อยตำรวจเนื่องในวันตำรวจเป็นประจำตลอดมาทุกปี จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2550 พล.ต.อ.เสรีพิศุทธ์ เตมียาเวส ขึ้นดำรงตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการตำรวจแห่งชาติ จึงได้จัดให้มีพิธีถวายสัตย์ปฏิญาณตนและสวนสนามของเหล่าข้าราชการตำรวจ เนื่องในวโรกาสมหามงคลเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา 80 พรรษา 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2550 ขึ้น ณ ราชมังคลากีฬาสถาน โดยมี พล.อ.สุรยุทธ์ จุลานนท์ นายกรัฐมนตรี เป็นประธานในพิธี และได้อัญเชิญธงชัยประจำหน่วยตำรวจซึ่งมีความสำคัญเช่นเดียวกับธงชัยเฉลิมพลของทหาร จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 13 ธง มากระทำพิธีถวายสัตย์ปฏิญาณและสวนสนามในครั้งดังกล่าว
