ประเพณีสารทเดือนสิบ เป็นงานบุญประเพณีของคนภาคใต้ ของประเทศไทย โดยเฉพาะ ชาวนครศรีธรรมราช ที่ได้รับอิทธิพลด้านความเชื่อ ซึ่งมาจากทางศาสนาพราหมณ์ โดยมีการผสมผสานกับความเชื่อทางพระพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งเข้ามาในภายหลัง โดยมีจุดมุ่งหมายสำคัญ เพื่อเป็นการอุทิศส่วนกุศล ให้แก่ดวงวิญญาณของบรรพชนและญาติที่ล่วงลับ ซึ่งได้รับการปล่อยตัวมาจากนรก ที่ตนต้องจองจำอยู่ เนื่องจากผลกรรมที่ตนได้เคยทำไว้ตอนที่ยังมีชีวิตอยู่ โดยจะเริ่มปล่อยตัวจากนรกในทุกวันแรม 1 ค่ำเดือน 10 เพื่อมายังโลกมนุษย์ โดยมีจุดประสงค์ในการมาขอส่วนบุญจากลูกหลานญาติพี่น้อง ที่ได้เตรียมการอุทิศไว้ให้เป็นการแสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อผู้ล่วงลับ หลังจากนั้นก็จะกลับไปยังนรก ในวันแรม 15 ค่ำ เดือน 10

“งานเทศกาลเดือนสิบ” จัดขึ้นครั้งแรกเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2466 ที่สนามหน้าเมือง นครศรีธรรมราช โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อหาเงินสร้างสโมสรข้าราชการซึ่งชำรุดมากแล้ว โดยในช่วงนั้น พระภัทรนาวิก จำรูญ (เอื้อน ภัทรนาวิก) ซึ่งเป็นนายกศรีธรรมราชสโมสร และพระยารัษฎานุประดิษฐ์ ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัด ได้ร่วมกันจัดงานประจำปีขึ้น พร้อมทั้งมีการออกร้าน และมหรสพต่างๆ โดยมีระยะเวลาในการจัดงาน 3 วัน 3 คืน จนกระทั่ง ถึงปี พ.ศ. 2535 ทางจังหวัดได้ย้ายสถานที่จัดงาน จากสนามหน้าเมืิอง ไปยังสวนสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทร์ 84 (ทุ่งท่าลาด) ซึ่งมีบริเวณกว้าง และได้มีการจัดตกแต่งสถานที่ ไว้อย่างสวยงาม

ประเพณีสารทเดือนสิบ มีความมุ่งหมายสำคัญอยู่ที่ การทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้ กับ พ่อ แม่ ปู่ ย่า ตา ยาย และญาติพี่น้อง ผู้ล่วงลับไปแล้ว แต่ด้วยเหตุที่วิถีชีวิตของชาวนครศรีธรรมราช เป็นวิถีชีวิตแห่งพระพุทธศาสนา ในสังคมเกษตรกรรม จึงมีความมุ่งหมายอื่นร่วมอยู่ด้วย
