กรมการศึกษาพื้นฐานของพม่า เป็นหน่วยงานที่รับผิดชอบเกี่ยวกับการวางนโยบายและบริหารการศึกษาระดับก่อนประถมศึกษา  มัธยมศึกษา  รวมทั้งการฝึกหัดครู  แต่เดิมนั้นเป็นระบบบริหารซึ่งรวมอำนาจไว้ที่ศูนย์กลาง  ต่อมาได้มีการกระจายอำนาจการบริหารออกไปสู่ระดับรัฐและหัวเมืองต่าง ๆ โดยมีหัวหน้าส่วนการศึกษานั้น ๆ เป็นผู้ควบคุมดูแลและประสานงาน  รัฐเป็นผู้สนับสนุนด้านงบประมาณของทุกโรงเรียน  โดยนักเรียนจะเสียค่าเล่าเรียนเฉพาะในระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายเท่านั้น
