ประเทศไทยส่งออกข้าวโพดในรูปแบบต่างๆสูงเป็นอันดับที่ 2 ของโลกโดยยอดการผลิตและการส่งออกข้าวโพดของไทยมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มขึ้นทุกปี หลังจากการเก็บเกี่ยวผลผลิตแล้วเกษตรกรจะนำส่วนที่เหลือไปเผาทิ้ง ทำให้เกิดมลพิษด้านอากาศอีกทั้งทำให้ผลผลิตที่เหลือไม่ได้นำไปใช้ประโยชน์
ปริมาณข้าวโพดที่เหลือจากการเก็บเกี่ยวมีเป็นจำนวนมากจนล้นตลาด ส่งผลถึงปัญหาระดับราคาข้าวโพดมีแนวโน้มลดลง อีกทั้งนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ได้น้อยและผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ได้มีราคาต่ำ
จากการศึกษาพบว่าสัดส่วนเซลลูโลสในข้าวโพดมีปริมาณที่มากเมื่อเทียบกับพืชชนิด ซึ่งเป็นลักษณะที่สำคัญในการผลิตเส้นใย ดังนั้นคณะผู้จัดทำจึงนำข้าวโพดมาพัฒนาเป็นเส้นด้าย แต่ยังพบปัญหาเรื่องเส้นด้ายจากข้าวโพดเป็นเส้นใยจากเซลลูโลสดูดซึมน้ำและความชื้นจึงเกิดเชื้อราและแบคทีเรียได้ง่าย
เมื่อทำการสืบค้นพบว่านาโนซิลเวอร์มีประสิทธิภาพในการยับยั้งเชื้อแบคทีเรียพวก E.coli และStaphylococcus aureus 100 เปอร์เซ็นต์ อีกทั้งไม่เป็นอันตรายต่อสุขภาพเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับสารชนิดนำมาเคลือบขณะเป็นเส้นใย เพราะจะทำให้ซิลเวอร์นาโนแทรกซึมอยู่ในเนื้อผ้า ทำให้มีคุณสมบัติในการยับยั้งแบคทีเรียได้นานขึ้น
