ประมาณ 300 – 100 ปีก่อนคริสต์ศักราช ชาวโรมันได้นำตัวหนังสือกรีกมาดัดแปลงเป็นตัวเลขโรมัน ซึ่งตัวเลขโรมันใช้สัญลักษณ์พื้นฐาน 7 ตัว ดังต่อไปนี้

หลักการเขียนตัวเลขโรมันแทนจำนวน
1. สัญลักษณ์แต่ละตัวเขียนเรียงกันได้ไม่เกิน 3 ตัว
2. เขียนเรียงกันโดยใช้หลักการเพิ่ม เรียงลำดับจากมากไปน้อย เช่น

3.ใช้หลักการลด โดยการเขียนตัวเลขที่มีค่าน้อยไว้ข้างหน้าตัวเลขที่มีค่ามาก เช่น
