สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉี

สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ( Association of Southeast Asian Nations หรือ ASEAN ) ได้ถูกก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยปฏิญญากรุงเทพ ( The Bangkok Declaration ) เมื่อวันที่ ๘ สิงหาคม ๒๕๑๐ โดยสมาชิกผู้ก่อตั้งมี ๕ ประเทศ ได้แก่ อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ และไทย และในเวลาต่อมาได้มีประเทศต่างๆมาเป็นสมาชิกเพิ่มเติมได้แก่ บรูไนดารุสซาลาม เวียดนาม ลาว พม่าและกัมพูชาตามลำดับ จากการรับกัมพูชาเข้ามาร่วมเป็นสมาชิก ทำให้อาเซียนมีสมาชิกครบ ๑๐ ประเทศในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ วัตถุประสงค์หลักของอาเซียนก่อตั้งขึ้นเพื่อส่งเสริมความมั่นคงทางความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจ ด้านการเมือง และสังคม ส่งเสริมสันติภาพ ส่งเสริมความมั่นคงของภูมิภาคและเพื่อส่งเสริมความร่วมมือระหว่างอาเซียนกับกับต่างประเทศและองค์กรระหว่างประเทศ สัญลักษณ์ของอาเซียน คือ รูปรวงข้าวสีเหลืองบนพื้นที่แดงล้อมรอบด้วยวงกลมสีขาวและสีน้ำเงิน รวงข้าว ๑๐ รวงนั้นแสดงถึง ประเทศสมาชิกทั้ง ๑๐ ประเทศ สีเหลืองหมายถึงความเจริญรุ่งเรือง สีแดงหมายถึงความกล้าหาญและการมีพลวัต สีขาวหมายถึงความบริสุทธิ์ และสีน้ำเงินหมายถึงสันติภาพและความมั่นคง
