ลักษณะ
- APAPI จะมีโคมไฟ 2 โคม
- PAPI จะมีโคมไฟทั้งหมด 4 โคม
การติดตั้ง
จะติดตั้งอยู่ข้างซ้ายของหัวทางวิ่ง (Runway) หรืออาจจะติดตั้งด้านขวาของทางวิ่งก็ได้ หากด้านซ้ายมีพื้นที่ติดตั้งไม่เพียงพอ การติดตั้งจะอยู่เลยแนวของหัวทางวิ่ง (Runway Threshold) เข้าไปเป็นระยะทางประมาณ 300 เมตร ระยะการติดตั้งสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงได้ ขึ้นอยู่กับขนาดของเครื่องบิน ถ้าเป็นเครื่องบินใหญ่มากระยะในการติดตั้งอาจจะมากกว่า 300 เมตร แต่ถ้าเป็นเครื่องบินขนาดเล็กอาจจะใช้ระยะไม่ถึง 30 เมตรได้

การใช้ประโยชน์
APAPI
ส่วนมากจะใช้กับสนามบินเล็ก ๆ เครื่องบินที่มาขึ้นลงก็เป็นเครื่องบินเล็ก โคมไฟจะมีอยู่ 2 โคม ขณะทำการร่อนลงสู่นามบิน ถ้าเห็นโคมไฟเป็นสีขาว 1 โคม และสีแดง 1 โคม แสดงว่ากำลังอยู่บนมุมร่อนที่ถูกต้อง ถ้าเห็นโคมไฟเป็นสีแดงทั้ง 2 โคม แสดงว่ากำลังอยู่ต่ำกว่ามุมร่อน ขณะเดียวกันถ้าเห็นโคมไฟเป็นสีขาวทั้ง 2
