การศึกษาเกี่ยวกับโรคระบบปลายประสาทในประเทศไทยแต่เดิมมีไม่มากเนื่องจากยังไม่มีเกณฑ์การวินิจฉัย แต่จากการสุ่มตรวจเท้าผู้ป่วยเบาหวาน จำนวน 245 ราย พบมีความผิดปกติจากการตรวจด้วย monofilament ร้อยละ 13.9 – 16.3 และในการศึกษาผู้ป่วยเบาหวานที่สถานพยาบาลในระดับปฐมภูมิในประเทศไทย ผู้ป่วยได้รับการวินิจฉัยว่าเป็นเบาหวานเฉลี่ยนาน 6.2 ปี พบว่ามีปลายประสาทอักเสบสูงถึงร้อยละ 34 และพบว่าผู้ป่วยเบาหวานในการศึกษานี้มีความชุกของแผลที่เท้าสูงถึงร้อยละ 8.1 โดยที่ผู้ป่วยเพียงร้อยละ 45 เคยได้รับการตรวจเท้าในช่วง 1 ปีที่ผ่านมา
