ปัจจุบัน เสือโคร่งทุกชนิดจัดเป็นสัตว์ที่อยู่ในภาวะใกล้สูญพันธุ์ของสหภาพนานาชาติเพื่อการอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติและทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ (IUCN) โดยถูกล่าเพื่อนำเอาชิ้นส่วนต่าง ๆ ขายในตลาดค้าสัตว์ป่าหรือตลาดมืด ซึ่งชิ้นส่วนของเสือโคร่งนับว่าเป็นที่ต้องการอย่างมากของทวีปเอเชียรองลงมาจากงาช้างและนอแรด
ในปี ค.ศ. 2010 ทุกประเทศที่มีเสือโคร่งอาศัยอยู่ในธรรมชาติมีการทำสัตยาบันร่วมกันว่าภายในปี ค.ศ. 2022 ทุกประเทศจะต้องทำให้ประชากรเสือโคร่งในป่าอนุรักษ์เพิ่มขึ้นอีกเท่าตัวจากปริมาณที่มีอยู่ปัจจุบัน สำหรับในประเทศไทย เสือโคร่งเป็นสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองตามพระราชบัญญัติสงวนและคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่า พุทธศักราช 2546
ในระดับโลก ในวันที่ 29 กรกฎาคม ได้ถูกจัดให้เป็นวันอนุรักษ์เสือโคร่งโลก
