ความเป็นมา

วันพ่อแห่งชาติ ได้จัดให้มีขึ้นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2523 โดยคุณหญิงเนื้อทิพย์ เสมรสุต นายกสมาคมผู้อาสาสมัครและช่วยการศึกษา หลักการและเหตุผลที่มีการจัดตั้งวันพ่อขึ้นแห่งชาติ เนื่องจากพ่อ เป็นบุคคลผู้มีพระคุณและมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อครอบครัวและสังคมที่ผู้เป็นลูกจะเคารพเทิดทูนและตอบแทนพระคุณด้วยความกตัญญู และสังคมควรที่จะยกย่องให้เกียรติรำลึกถึงผู้เป็นพ่อ จึงถือเอาวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปี ซึ่งเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชเป็น "วันพ่อแห่งชาติ"




กิจกรรมวันพ่อแห่งชาติจัดติดต่อกันทุกปีตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2523 โดยการริเริ่มของนายกสมาคมผู้อาสาสมัครและช่วยการศึกษา คุณหญิงเนื้อพิทย์ เสมรสุตสัญลักษณ์ที่ใช้ในวันพ่อได้แก่ ดอกพุทธรักษาซึ่งมีชื่ออันเป็นมงคล



พระราชประวัติ



พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชเสด็จพระราชสมภพในราชสกุลมหิดลอันเป็นสายหนึ่งในราชวงศ์จักรี ณ โรงพยาบาลเมาต์ออเบิร์น เมืองเคมบริดจ์ รัฐแมสซาชูเซตส์ สหรัฐอเมริกา เมื่อวันจันทร์ เดือนอ้าย ขึ้น 12 ค่ำ ปีเถาะ นพศก จุลศักราช 1289 ตรงกับวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2470 ซึ่งเหตุที่พระราชสมภพในสหรัฐอเมริกา เนื่องจากพระบรมราชชนกและพระบรมราชชนนีกำลังทรงศึกษาวิชาการอยู่ที่นั่น

พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชเป็นพระโอรสองค์ที่สามในสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้ามหิดลอดุลเดช กรมหลวงสงขลานครินทร์ (สมเด็จพระมหิตลาธิเบศร อดุลยเดชวิกรม พระบรมราชชนก ในกาลต่อมา) และหม่อมสังวาลย์ ตะละภัฎ (ชูกระมล) (สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี ในกาลต่อมา) มีพระนามขณะนั้นว่า พระวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าภูมิพลอดุลเดช มีพระเชษฐภคินีและสมเด็จพระบรมเชษฐาธิราช 2 พระองค์ คือ สมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ และพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดล ซึ่งสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี ทรงออกพระนามเรียกพระองค์เป็นการลำลองว่า "เล็ก"

พระนาม "ภูมิพลอดุลเดช" นั้น พระบรมราชชนนีได้รับพระราชทานทางโทรเลขจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เมื่อวันที่ 14 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2470 โดยทรงกำกับตัวสะกดเป็นอักษรโรมันว่า "Bhumibala Aduladeja" ทำให้สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนีทรงเข้าพระทัยว่าได้รับพระราชทานนามพระโอรสว่า "ภูมิบาล"ในระยะแรกพระนามของพระองค์สะกดเป็นภาษาไทยว่า "ภูมิพลอดุลเดช" ต่อมา พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชเองทรงเขียนว่า "ภูมิพลอดุลยเดช" โดยทรงเขียนทั้งสองแบบสลับกันไป จนมาทรงนิยมใช้แบบหลังซึ่งมีตัว "ย" สะกดตราบปัจจุบัน

พระนามของพระองค์มีความหมายว่า

ภูมิพล - ภูมิ หมายความว่า "แผ่นดิน" และ พล หมายความว่า "พลัง" รวมกันแล้วหมายถึง "พลังแห่งแผ่นดิน"
อดุลยเดช - อดุลย หมายความว่า "ไม่อาจเทียบได้" และ เดช หมายความว่า "อำนาจ" รวมกันแล้วหมายถึง "ผู้มีอำนาจที่ไม่อาจเทียบได้"
