หลักสูตรการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน พุทธศักราช 2551 (สำนักวิชาการและมาตรฐานการศึกษา: 1-2 ) กล่าวถึงความสำคัญของการเรียนวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ว่าวิชาคณิตศาสตร์มีบทบาทสำคัญยิ่งต่อการพัฒนาความคิดมนุษย์ ทำให้มนุษย์มีความคิดสร้างสรรค์ คิดอย่างมีเหตุผล เป็นระบบ มีแบบแผน สามารถวิเคราะห์ปัญหาหรือสถานการณ์ได้อย่างถี่ถ้วนรอบคอบ ช่วยให้คาดการณ์ วางแผน ตัดสินใจ แก้ปัญหา และนำไปใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันได้อย่างถูกต้องเหมาะสม นอกจากนี้คณิตศาสตร์ยังเป็นเครื่องมือในการศึกษาทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยีและศาสตร์อื่น ๆคณิตศาสตร์จึงมีประโยชน์ต่อการดำเนินชีวิต ช่วยพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตให้ดีขึ้น และสามารถอยู่ร่วมกับผู้อื่นได้อย่างมีความสุขโดยกำหนดคุณภาพของผู้เรียนให้เป็นไปตามความสามารถทางการเรียนรู้ และวัยสำหรับคุณภาพของผู้เรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษา โรงเรียนกาญจนานุเคราะห์ กำหนดไว้ ดังนี้

จากคุณภาพของผู้เรียนข้างต้นในฐานะที่คณะผู้จัดทำโครงงานกำลังศึกษาอยู่ชั้นมัธยมศึกษา ตอนต้น ซึ่งได้ศึกษาเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับเรื่องจำนวนและตัวเลข การคิดรวบยอดเกี่ยวกับจำนวนจริง การหาค่ากลางของข้อมูล การนำเสนอข้อมูล การใช้วิธีการหลากหลายในการแก้ปัญหา จึงนำความรู้ดังกล่าวมาใช้เพื่อการดำเนินโครงงานคณิตศาสตร์ เรื่อง สำรวจความชอบในสาระและการเรียนรู้วิชาคณิตศาสตร์
