แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับห้องสมุดมีชีวิต (living library) มีต้นกำเนิดมาจากประเทศสิงคโปร์ ด้วยขณะนั้นผู้ที่ดูแลห้องสมุดประชาชนได้ทำวิจัยหาสาเหตุที่เยาวชนไม่เข้าห้องสมุด แล้วนำผลวิจัยมาแก้ไขปัญหาให้ตรงจุด นั่นคือ ออกแบบห้องสมุด ตลอดจนจัดกิจกรรมและบริการให้ตรงกับความต้องการของเยาวชนให้มากที่สุด แล้วริเริ่มจัดทำห้องห้องสมุดประชาชนที่ตึกนิชายาม่าในศูนย์การค้าย่าน Orchard เป็นแห่งแรก ปรากฏว่าเยาวชนนิยมเข้าใช้บริการจนเนืองแน่น
