รถไฟฟ้ามหานคร สายเฉลิมรัชมงคล หรือรถไฟฟ้า MRT คือโครงการรถไฟฟ้าใต้ดินสายแรกของประเทศไทย ริเริ่มขึ้นเพื่อบรรเทาปัญหาการจราจรในกรุงเทพฯ ที่ได้สะสมต่อเนื่องมาจากการขยายตัวของเมือง และจำนวนประชากรที่มากขึ้นในกรุงเทพฯ เป็นระยะเวลาต่อเนื่องนับสิบปี

โครงการนี้เกิดขึ้นโดยความร่วมมือระหว่างภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน โดยมี การรถไฟฟ้าขนส่งมวลชนแห่งประเทศไทย (รฟม.) เป็นเจ้าของโครงการและผู้ให้สัมปทาน มีหน้าที่จัดสร้างโครงสร้างพื้นฐาน และมอบสัมปทานการเดินรถให้แก่เอกชน คือ บริษัท ทางด่วนและรถไฟฟ้ากรุงเทพ จำกัด (มหาชน) เป็นผู้ให้บริการการเดินรถ

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานนาม เฉลิมรัชมงคล อันมีความหมายว่า งานเฉลิมฉลองความเป็นมงคลแห่งความเป็นพระราชา เมื่อวันที่ 9 สิงหาคม 2542 และได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินทรงเปิดการเดินรถ โครงการรถไฟฟ้ามหานคร สายเฉลิมรัชมงคล อย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อวันที่ 3 กรกฎาคม 2547
