ประวัติวันสงกรานต์
คำว่า “สงกรานต์” มาจากภาษาสันสกฤตว่า “สํ-กรานต” ซึ่งแปลว่า ก้าวขึ้น ย่างขึ้น หรือย้ายขึ้น โดยมีนัยความหมายว่า การเข้าสู่ศักราชราศีใหม่ หรือ วันขึ้นปีใหม่ นั้นเอง โดยเทศกาลสงกรานต์ นั้นเป็นประเพณีที่มีความเก่าแก่และคนไทยสืบทอดกันมาแต่โบราณคู่กับประเพณีตรุษจีนกันเลยทีเดียว จึงได้มีการรวมเรียกกันว่า “ประเพณีตรุษสงกรานต์” ซึ่งแปลว่าการส่งท้ายปีเก่า ต้อนรับปีใหม่ นั้นเอง
วันมหาสงกรานต์
ในสมัยโบราณ คนไทยถือว่า วันขึ้น 1 ต่ำ เดือนอ้าย ซึ่งจะตรงในช่วงเดือน พฤศจิกายนหรือธันวาคม ให้เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่ แต่ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ได้มีการเปลี่ยนให้วันที่ 1 เมษายน เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่ จนต่อมาในสมัยยุค จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม ในปี พ.ศ. 2483 ได้เปลี่ยนวันปีใหม่ให้เป็นวันสากล คือ วันที่ 1 มกราคม แต่ถึงอย่างไร คนโบราณก็ยังคงคุ้นเคยกับวันปีใหม่ไทยในเดือนเมษายน จึงได้กำหนดให้วันที่ 13 เมษายน เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่ไทยร่วมด้วย
นางสงกรานต์ ในโบราณมีการกำหนดไว้ถึง 7 นางด้วยกัน ซึ่งแต่ละนางก็จะมีความหมาย คำทำนายที่แตกต่างกันออกไป โดยทั้ง 7 นางสงกานต์ จะประกอบไปด้วย

3. นางโคราคเทวี
4. นางกิริณีเทวี

กิจกรรมที่ประชาชนทำในวันสงกรานต์
การก่อเจดีย์ทราย
จะทำในวันใดวันหนึ่งของวันที่ 13-15 เมษายนก็ได้ ผู้ทำบุญจะช่วยกันขนทรายมาก่อเป็นเจดีย์ขนาดต่างๆ ในบริเวณวัด ซึ่งจะเป็นประโยชน์ ให้ใช้ก่อสร้างหรือถมพื้นที่เป็นเรื่องที่ถือว่าได้บุญและสนุกสนาน แต่ไม่มีข้อจำกัดว่าต้องทำทุกวัด
การปล่อยนกปล่อยปลา
เป็นการทำบุญเพื่อแสดงความกรุณาต่อสัตว์ นิยมทำในวันสงกรานต์และไม่จำกัดว่าจะทำในวัดเท่านั้น
การสรงน้ำพระ
มีทั้งสรงน้ำพระพุทธรูปและภิกษุ สามเณร เพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลในโอกาสขึ้นปีใหม่อันเป็นเวลาที่อากาศร้อน

การรดน้ำผู้ใหญ่
เป็นเรื่องของการแสดงคารวะต่อผู้ใหญ่ที่เคารพนับถือขอพรท่านก็จะให้ศีลให้พรให้มีความสุขปีใหม่
การทำบุญอัฐิ
เป็นเรื่องที่นิยมทำแบบนิมนต์พระ ชักบังสุกุลอัฐิของญาติที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว แล้วอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้ โดยนิมนต์พระไปยังสถานที่เก็บหรือบรรจุอัฐิ หรือถ้าไม่มีอัฐิจะเขียนชื่อผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้วก็ได้

เป็นการสนุกสนานรื่นเริงอีกอย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของสงกรานต์ คือ สาดน้ำกัน

บางแห่งอาจมีการแห่นางแมวเพื่อขอฝนด้วย ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องสนุกสนานรื่นเริงเหมือนกัน แต่ก็หวังผลในทางเกษตรกรรมด้วย กล่าวคือถ้าเกิดฝนแล้งก็แห่นางแมวกันในช่วงวันทำบุญสงกรานต์ เช่นเดียวกัน

6. เป็นการเตรียมตัวบวช ถ้าเป็นผู้ชายโดยเอาระยะเวลานี้บวชกัน เพราะหลังสงกรานต์ต้องเตรียมตัวทำนาแล้ว

7. เป็นการทำความสะอาดพระ โต๊ะบูชา บ้านเรือน ทั้งในและนอกบ้าน
