ซีพีเอฟจดทะเบียนเป็นบริษัทจำกัด เมื่อวันที่ 17 มกราคม 2521 ในนาม “บริษัท เจริญโภคภัณฑ์อาหารสัตว์ จำกัด” ด้วยทุนจดทะเบียนเริ่มแรก 5 ล้านบาท โดยเริ่มมีรายได้จากการจำหน่ายอาหารสัตว์บก ในเขต 9 จังหวัดภาคใต้ในปี2524 และต่อมาในปี 2530 ได้เริ่มขยายธุรกิจไปสู่การเลี้ยงสัตว์บก โดยมีเป้าหมายที่จะดำเนินธุรกิจในลักษณะครบวงจรมากขึ้น ในปี 2531 ซีพีเอฟเริ่มดำเนินธุรกิจอุตสาหกรรมเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์น้ำ ในด้านการผลิตและจำหน่ายอาหารกุ้ง การเพาะเลี้ยงกุ้ง และการแปรรูปกุ้งเพื่อในปี 2541 ได้มีการปรับโครงสร้างทางธุรกิจในกลุ่มเครือเจริญโภคภัณฑ์ โดยซีพีเอฟได้เข้าซื้อบริษัทที่ดำเนินธุรกิจเกษตรอุตสาหกรรมด้านการเลี้ยงสัตว์ และการแปรรูปเนื้อสัตว์ของเครือเจริญโภคภัณฑ์ เข้ามาอยู่ภายใต้การบริหารงานของซีพีเอฟ การปรับโครงสร้างทางธุรกิจในครั้งนี้เสร็จสมบูรณ์ในช่วงต้นปี 2542 ซึ่งมีผลทำให้ซีพีเอฟเป็นแกนนำในการดำเนินธุรกิจเกษตรอุตสาหกรรมของเครือเจริญโภคภัณฑ์ในประเทศไทย และเพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับโครงสร้างการดำเนินธุรกิจและเป้าหมายหลักของบริษัทที่มุ่งเน้นผลิตอาหารที่มีคุณภาพสู่ตลาดทั่วโลก ซีพีเอฟจึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “บริษัท เจริญโภคภัณฑ์อาหาร จำกัด (มหาชน)” ในเดือนธันวาคม 2542 ภายใต้โครงสร้างใหม่นี้ ทำให้ซีพีเอฟมีการดำเนินธุรกิจครอบคลุมไปทั่วทุกภาคของประเทศ โดยแบ่งเป็น 2 ธุรกิจหลักคือ ธุรกิจสัตว์บก และธุรกิจสัตว์น้ำ ซึ่งทั้ง 2 ธุรกิจนี้มีการดำเนินงานในลักษณะครบวงจร โดยเริ่มจากการผลิตและจำหน่ายอาหารสัตว์ การเพาะพันธุ์สัตว์ การเลี้ยงสัตว์ และอุตสาหกรรมแปรรูปอาหารจากเนื้อสัตว์การส่งออก
