สมาคมเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้หรือสมาค

สมาคมเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้หรือสมาคมอาสา (Association of South-East Asia – ASA) ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อ 31 กรกฎาคม 2504 มีสมาชิก 3 ประเทศได้แก่ ฟิลิปปินส์ สหพันธ์มลายา และไทย โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อช่วยเหลือกันทางเศรษฐกิจและวัฒนธรรม แต่เกิดการขัดแย้งกันเรื่องดินแดนระหว่างสหพันธ์มลายากับฟิลิปปินส์ ในปลายปีพ.ศ. 2505 ความสัมพันธ์เลยเหินห่างกันไป

ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. 2509 จึงหันมาคืนดีกันใหม่อีกครั้ง สิงคโปร์ขอแยกตัวออกจากสหพันธ์มลายา ในปี พ.ศ. 2508 และสหพันธ์มลายาเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นประเทศมาเลเซีย การรวมตัวกันครั้งนี้มีการการขยายแนวคิดไปยังประเทศต่าง ๆ หลายประเทศจนสามารถรวมตัวกันได้โดยรวมตัวกันครั้งแรกเมื่อ 8 สิงหาคม 2510 ที่กรุงเทพฯ จึงถือเอาวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม ของทุกปีเป็นวันอาเซียน

สมาชิกอาเซียนแรกก่อตั้งมีเพียง 5 ประเทศ ได้แก่ ไทย อินโดนีเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ มาเลเซีย และสิงคโปร์ต่อมาปีพ.ศ. 2527 เมื่อบรูไนได้รับเอกราชจากอังกฤษจึงขอเข้าเป็นสมาชิกกลุ่มอาเซียน

ส่วนกลุ่มประเทศ C L M V ซึ่งหมายถึง ประเทศ กัมพูชา ลาว เมียนมาร์ และเวียดนาม ซึ่งเคยปกครองในระบอบสังคมนิยมคอมมิวนิสต์มาก่อน แต่เมื่อสหภาพโซเวียตล่มสลาย ก็ไม่ได้สนใจเหลียวแลประเทศบริวารเหล่านี้ ประกอบกับสิ้นสุดยุคสงครามเย็นลงในปี 2534 เหตุการณ์แบ่งแยกแนวคิดการปกครองเหมือนเมื่อก่อนเริ่มคลี่คลาย หันมาร่วมมือกันทางเศรษฐกิจ รัฐบาลไทยสมัยพลเอกชาติชาย ชุณหวัน ยังมีนโยบายกับประเทศเพื่อนบ้านเหล่านี้โดยมุ่งมั่น เปลี่ยนจากสนามรบเป็นสนามการค้า


จากนั้นเวียดนามเป็นประเทศแรกที่เข้าเป็นสมาชิกอาเซียนในปีพ.ศ. 2538 ตามมาด้วยลาวและพม่าในปีพ.ศ. 2540 ส่วนกัมพูชาเข้าเป็นสมาชิกกลุ่มอาเซียนลำดับสุดท้ายในปีพ.ศ. 2542
