พระราชประวัติ
สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์ พระบรมราชเทวี เป็นพระเจ้าลูกเธอพระองค์ที่ 50 ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และลำดับที่ 3 ซึ่งประสูติแต่สมเด็จพระปิยมาวดี ศรีพัชรินทรมาตา ทรงพระราชสมภพในพระบรมมหาราชวัง เมื่อวันเสาร์ เดือน12 แรม 12 ค่ำ ปีวอก เวลา 5 โมงเช้า 40 นาที ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 10 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2403 โดยได้รับพระราชทานพระนามจากสมเด็จพระราชบิดาว่า พระเจ้าลูกเธอ พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์ ซึ่งคำว่า “สุนันทา” นั้น เป็นนามของพระมเหสี 1 ใน 4 พระองค์ของพระอินทร์ นอกจากนี้ ยังได้รับพระราชทานพรเป็นภาษามคธ ซึ่งสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส ได้ทรงพระนิพนธ์แปลเป็นภาษาไทยไว้ว่า “พระองค์เจ้าองค์นี้ ทรงนามว่า “สุนันทากุมารีรัตน์” อย่างนี้ดังนี้ จงอย่ามีโรค จงมีความสุข ปราศจากความทุกข์และความวุ่นวายเถิด พระองค์เจ้าหญิงนั้นจงมั่งคั่งด้วยทรัพย์มาก มีโภคมาก มียศและบริวารไม่แปรผัน ขอพระพุทธเจ้า พระธรรม พระสงฆ์ กับทั้งอารักขเทวดา จงช่วยอภิบาลรักษา พระองค์เจ้าหญิงสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์นั้นให้พ้นภัยจากอันตราย เป็นนิตย์ ขอความสัมฤทธิ์จงมีแก่พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์เทอญ”

พระองค์ทรงมีพระเชษฐาและพระขนิษฐาร่วมพระมารดาทั้งสิ้น 6 พระองค์ ได้แก่ พระองค์เจ้าอุณากรรณอนันตนรไชย พระองค์เจ้าเทวัญอุไทยวงศ์ พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์ พระองค์เจ้าสว่างวัฒนา พระองค์เจ้าเสาวภาผ่องศรี และ พระองค์เจ้าสวัสดิโสภณ ภายหลังการสวรรคตของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์ซึ่งขณะนั้นมีพระชันษาเพียง 8 ปี จึงเปลี่ยนพระฐานันดรศักดิ์จาก “พระเจ้าลูกเธอ” เป็น “พระเจ้าน้องนางเธอ พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์” และเมื่อพระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์ ได้ถวายตัวรับราชการเป็นภรรยาเจ้าเมื่อพระชนมายุประมาณ 15 – 16 พรรษา ซึ่งนับได้ว่าเป็นภรรยาเจ้าพระองค์ที่หกในรัชกาลที่ 5 จึงดำรงพระอิสริยยศเป็น “พระนางเธอ พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์”

พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์ทรงเป็นคนแข็ง แกร่งกล้า เด็ดขาดในบางเรื่อง แต่ด้วยพระสิริโฉม รวมทั้งพระอัธยาศัยที่สุภาพ เรียบร้อย และสงบเสงี่ยม ทำให้พระองค์เป็นที่นับถือในพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ และข้าราชบริพาร และทรงเป็นที่สนิทเสน่หาในพระราชสวามียิ่งนัก


ในวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2421 พระองค์เจ้าสุนันทากุมารีรัตน์ ประสูติพระราชธิดาพระองค์แรกของพระองค์ โดยเป็นพระราชธิดาพระองค์ที่ 21 ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอพระองค์นี้มีพระตำหนิเด่นชัด คือ มีติ่งที่พระกรรณข้างขวามาแต่กำเนิด จึงพระราชทานพระนามว่า เจ้าฟ้าหญิงกรรณาภรณ์เพชรรัตน์ โสภางคทัศนียลักษณ์ อัครวรราชกุมารีรัตน์
