ความเป็นมา

ชาวเลอาศัยอยู่ทางฝั่งทะเลอันดามัน ทางตอนใต้ของประเทศไทยแบ่งออกเป็น ๒ กลุ่มวัฒนธรรม คือ กลุ่มอูรักลาโว้ย และกลุ่มมอเก็น ชาวเลที่อาศัยอยู่ในจังหวัดกระบี่ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นกลุ่มอูรักลาโว้ย ตั้งถิ่นฐานบริเวณเกาะพีพี เกาะจำ เกาะปู เกาะไหง และเกาะลันตา นอกจากนี้ยังมีกลุ่มชาวเลที่เป็นเครือญาติในสายตระกูลเดียวกันอาศัยกระจัดกระจายบริเวณจังหวัดใกล้เคียง ได้แก่ บริเวณเกาะสิเหร่ หาดราไวย์ แหลมหลา บ้านเหนือ และบ้านสะปำ จังหวัดภูเก็ต ตลอดไปจนถึง เกาะหลีเป๊ะและเกาะลาวีจังหวัดสตูล

ตามตำนานบ่งชี้ว่าชาวเลกลุ่มอูรักลาโว้ยเคยมีบรรพบุรุษเชื่อมโยงกับชาวเลกลุ่มมอเก็นและเป็นกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่เดินทางอพยพเร่ร่อนทางทะเลมายาวนานในประวัติศาสตร์
