การจำลองการแข่งขันครั้งนี้มี 2 วัตถุประสงค์ คือ
การเตรียมความพร้อมของการเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการแข่งขันฟิสิกส์โอลิมปิกระดับเอเชีย ครั้งที่ 4
คัดเลือกนักเรียนที่เข้ารับการอบรมเข้มวิชาฟิสิกส์ของศูนย์ สอวน. ทั้ง 11 ศูนย์ เพื่อคัดเลือกตัวแทน จำนวน 40 คน ส่งไปยัง สสวท. ให้ทำการคัดเลือกตัวแทนประเทศไทยไปแข่งขันฟิสิกส์โอลิมปิกระหว่างประเทศร่วมกับนักเรียนที่ผ่านการคัดเลือกจากทั่วประเทศ อีก 40 คน
แนวทางการจำลองการแข่งขันฯ นี้เป็นแนวทางเดียวกับที่ใช้ในการแข่งขันฟิสิกส์โอลิมปิกระหว่างประเทศ โดยให้นักเรียนตัวแทนของศูนย์ สอวน. 11 ศูนย์ทั่วประเทศมาทำการแข่งขันกัน การสอบแข่งขันมีทั้งภาคทฤษฎีที่ใช้ข้อสอบอัตนัย (30 คะแนน) และภาคปฏิบัติที่ต้องทำการเก็บข้อมูลและวิเคราะห์เพื่อหาคำตอบพร้อมประเมินความคลาดเคลื่อนของผลการทดลอง (20 คะแนน)

จากการประชุมอาจารย์ที่เป็นผู้นำนักเรียนมาจากศูนย์ต่าง ๆ ได้ข้อสรุปเกี่ยวรูปแบบของการจำลองการแข่งขันครั้งนี้ ดังนี้
