สำหรับคำว่า "สงกรานต์" มาจากภาษาสั

 สำหรับคำว่า "สงกรานต์" มาจากภาษาสันสกฤตว่า "สํ-กรานต" ซึ่งแปลว่า ก้าวขึ้น ย่างขึ้น หรือการย้ายที่ เคลื่อนที่ โดยหมายความอีกนัยนึงว่า เป็นการเข้าสู่ศักราชราศีใหม่ หรือวันขึ้นปีใหม่นั่นเอง ส่วนเทศกาลสงกรานต์นั้น เป็นประเพณีเก่าแก่ของคนไทยสืบทอดกันมาตั้งแต่โบราณคู่กันมากับประเพณีตรุษจีน จึงมีการเรียกรวมกันว่า "ประเพณีตรุษสงกรานต์" ซึ่งหมายถึง ประเพณีส่งท้ายปีเก่า ต้อนรับปีใหม่ นั่นเอง
