วัดพระแก้วจ.เชียงราย เดิมชื่อวัดป่าญะ หรือป่าเยียะ (ป่าไผ่ชนิดหนึ่ง) ในปี พ.ศ. ๑๙๗๗ เกิดฟ้าผ่าลงที่องค์พระเจดีย์จนพังทลายลง ทำให้พบพระแก้วมรกตซ่อนไว้ในพระเจดีย์ จึงได้ชื่อใหม่ว่า “วัดพระแก้ว”หลังจากนั้นได้อัญเชิญพระแก้วมรกตไปประดิษฐาน ณ เมืองต่างๆ คือ ลำปาง เชียงใหม่ หลวงพระบาง เวียงจันทน์ กรุงธนบุรี และกรุงเทพมหานคร ตามลำดับ ต่อมากรมศิลปากรได้ประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนองค์พระเจดีย์ เป็นโบราณสถานสำคัญของชาติ เมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๔๗๘ และได้รับการยกฐานะเป็นพระอารามหลวงเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๑
