การวิจัยครั้งนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากระบวนการตัดสินใจของนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 เรื่อง ฟิสิกส์นิวเคลียร์ จากการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้ ตามแนวคิดวิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยีและสังคม (STS) ของ Yuenyong (2006) กลุ่มเป้าหมายเป็นนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 ห้อง 6/1 ภาคเรียนที่ 1 ปีการศึกษา 2553 โรงเรียนนารายณ์คำผงวิทยา จังหวัดสุรินทร์ จำนวน 40 คน จำแนกเป็นนักเรียนกลุ่มเก่ง 3 กลุ่ม จำนวน 20 คนและนักเรียนกลุ่มอ่อน 3 กลุ่ม จำนวน 20 คน การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ที่ยึดถือกระบวนทัศน์การตีความ เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยแบ่งออกเป็นเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการดำเนินการวิจัย ได้แก่ (1) แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้วิชาฟิสิกส์ เรื่อง ฟิสิกส์นิวเคลียร์ ตามแนวคิดวิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยีและสังคม (STS) ของ Yuenyong (2006) จำนวน 10 แผน แบ่งเป็น 3 สาระได้แก่ สาระปรมาณูเพื่อสันติ สาระอยู่ปลอดภัยกับกัมมันตภาพรังสี และสาระโรงไฟฟ้านิวเคลียร์สำหรับประเทศไทย (2) แบบแผนสำหรับการลงรหัสพฤติกรรมกระบวนการตัดสินใจ ซึ่งดัดแปลงมาจาก Jung and Nam (2004) และสร้างขึ้นตามกระบวนการตัดสินใจที่ผู้วิจัยเสนอ 5 ขั้นตอน ได้แก่ กำหนดประเด็น (I) รวบรวมข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวข้อง (S) เสนอทางเลือก (P) ประเมินทางเลือก (E) และตัดสินใจเลือกทางเลือก (D) และเครื่องมือที่ใช้เก็บข้อมูล เพื่อนำมาตีความกระบวนการตัดสินใจ ได้แก่ (1) การสังเกตแบบมีส่วนร่วม (2) การสัมภาษณ์อย่างไม่เป็นทางการ (3) อนุทิน และ (4) ผลงานของนักเรียน
ผลการวิจัยพบว่า กระบวนการตัดสินใจของนักเรียนแต่ละกลุ่มมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปสู่ลักษณะที่มีความคงที่มากขึ้น เนื่องจากมีประสบการณ์ในการทำงานกลุ่มร่วมกัน โดยในสาระปรมาณูเพื่อสันติและสาระอยู่ปลอดภัยกับกัมมันตภาพรังสี นักเรียนที่มีความสามารถทางสติปัญญาแตกต่างกัน จะมีกระบวนการตัดสินใจไม่เหมือนกัน ส่วนในสาระโรงไฟฟ้านิวเคลียร์สำหรับประเทศไทย นักเรียนทุกกลุ่มจะมีกระบวนการตัดสินใจในแต่ละประเด็นเหมือนกัน และดำเนินไปอย่างเป็นลำดับขั้นตามลำดับขั้นกระบวนการตัดสินใจที่ผู้วิจัยเสนอและนักเรียนได้นำความรู้วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยีและสังคมมาใช้ในการตัดสินใจ
