ประวัติ[แก้]
ในสมัยก่อน การเดินทางติดต่อระหว่างภาคกลางกับภาคอีสานนั้น มีอุปสรรคคือจะต้องผ่านป่าดงดิบขนาดใหญ่ซึ่งเต็มไปด้วยอันตรายมากมายทั้งสัตว์ร้ายและไข้ป่า ผู้คนที่เดินทางผ่านป่านี้ล้มตายเป็นจำนวนมาก จึงได้ขนานนามว่า ดงพญาไฟ ต่อมาเมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จผ่านในคราวเปิดทางรถไฟสายกรุงเทพ-นครราชสีมา ทรงเห็นว่าชื่อดงพญาไฟนี้ ฟังดูน่ากลัว จึงโปรดให้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นดงพญาเย็นตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นมา

ปี 2502 จอมพลสฤษดิ์ ธนะรัชต์ เล็งเห็นว่าบริเวณเขาใหญ่นี้ มีธรรมชาติอุดมสมบูรณ์ อีกทั้งมีความสวยงาม เหมาะใช้เป็นที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจ แต่มีปัญหาคือมีการตัดไม้ทำลายป่า จึงได้ให้มีการสำรวจพื้นที่บริเวณตำบลเขาใหญ่เดิมและบริเวณโดยรอบและได้ตราพระราชบัญญัติอุทยานแห่งชาติขึ้น ตั้งเขาใหญ่เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติในปี 2505 โดยเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย และได้ตัดถนนธนะรัชต์แยกออกมาจากถนนมิตรภาพมายังตัวเขาใหญ่ โดยถนนนี้ขึ้นมาบนเขาใหญ่แล้วจะแยกเป็นสองสาย คือไปสิ้นสุดที่น้ำตกเหวสุวัตสายหนึ่ง และไปสิ้นสุดที่เขาเขียวอีกสายหนึ่ง ซึ่งก่อนปี 2525 ถนนธนะรัชต์นี้เป็นเพียงถนนสายเดียวที่จะมายังเขาใหญ่ได้
