ประวัติความเป็นมา วันคุ้มครองโลก (Earth Day)

โดยเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2505 เกย์ลอร์ด เนลสัน ได้ขอให้ประธานาธิบดี จอห์น เอฟ เคนเนดี้ หยิบยกเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นวาระแห่งชาติ ซึ่งประธานาธิบดี จอห์น เอฟ เคนเนดี้ ก็เห็นด้วยและได้ออกทัวร์ทั่วประเทศ เป็นเวลา 5 วัน 11 รัฐ ในช่วงเดือนกันยายน พ.ศ. 2506 ซึ่งการทัวร์ครั้งนี้นับเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการริเริ่ม วันคุ้มครองโลก

ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2512 วุฒิสมาชิกเนลสัน ได้ผลักดันให้มีการชุมนุม แสดงความคิดเห็นเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมในระดับประชาชนรากหญ้าทั่วประเทศ ทำให้เกิดเป็นกระแสตื่นตัวเรื่องการอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมไปทั่วสหรัฐอเมริกา

จนเมื่อวันที่ 22 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2513 ประชาชนอเมริกันที่ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม กว่า 20 ล้านคน ได้พร้อมใจกันมาชุมนุม เพื่อประท้วงการเพิ่มขึ้นของมลภาวะ และการทำลายทรัพยากรธรรมชาติบนพื้นโลก ผลจากการชุมนุมก่อให้เกิดการออกพระราชบัญญัติแก้ไขมลพิษในอากาศของสหรัฐอเมริกา และมีการจัดตั้งสำนักงานป้องกันสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งชาติขึ้น จนในที่สุดก็มีการกำหนดให้วันที่ 22 เมษายน ของทุกปีเป็นวันคุ้มครองโลก หรือ "Earth Day" โดยเริ่มตั้งแต่วันที่ 22 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2513 เป็นต้นมา

ทั้งนี้ นิตยสาร อเมริกัน เฮริเทจ (American Heritage Magazine) ฉบับเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2536 ได้หวนรำลึกถึงเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวว่า "เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่โดดเด่นที่สุดเหตุการณ์หนึ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในประวัติศาสตร์ของประชาธิปไตย"

และเมื่อทั่วโลกต่างจัดกิจกรรมร่วมกันอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมแล้ว ประเทศไทยเองก็ไม่ได้น้อยหน้า ได้เริ่มจัดให้มีการรณรงค์ วันคุ้มครองโลก ขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2533 โดยโรงเรียนสอนภาษาสมาคมนักเรียนเก่าสหรัฐอเมริกา และในปี พ.ศ. 2533 นี้ ถือเป็นยุคเริ่มต้นของการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม หลังจาก สืบ นาคะเสถียร หัวหน้าเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าห้วยขาแข้งกระทำอัตวินิบาตกรรม และตลอดระยะเวลาหลายปีที่ผ่านมาก็ได้มีการรณรงค์อนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมมาโดยตลอด เพื่อให้ประชาชนได้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของธรรมชาติ ป่าไม้ และผลกระทบอันร้ายแรงจากการตัดไม้ทำลายป่า นอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีการจัดกิจกรรมรักษ์ธรรมชาติ เพื่อหารายได้เข้ามูลนิธิ สืบ นาคะเสถียร ผู้บุกเบิกด้านการอนุรักษ์ป่าไม้คนสำคัญของประเทศไทยอีกด้วย

5. เพื่อคงสภาพระดับประชากรไว้ ให้อยู่ในสภาพที่สมดุลกับทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่มีอยู่

6. เพื่อสร้างพลังอำนาจจากองค์กรต่าง ๆ ทั่วโลกให้ร่วมกันปกป้องบรรยากาศ น้ำ และสภาพอื่น ๆ ให้พ้นจากการกระทำที่มิชอบของมนุษย์

ปัจจุบันมีหลายหน่วยงานทั่วโลกที่เห็นความสำคัญของ วันคุ้มครองโลก มากขึ้น จึงได้ร่วมกันรณรงค์ และจัดกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ เพื่อช่วยให้ทุกคนตระหนักถึงการอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติ และสิ่งแวดล้อมกันมากขึ้น โดยมีกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ เช่น
