พล.อ.ประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา ชื่อเล่น ตู่ หรือที่สื่อมวลชนเรียกว่า "บิ๊กตู่" เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 21 มีนาคม พ.ศ.2497 ที่จังหวัดนครราชสีมา

ชีวิตครอบครัว

พลเอกประยุทธ์ สมรสกับรองศาสตราจารย์นราพร จันทร์โอชา อาจารย์ประจำสถาบันภาษา จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย มีบุตรสาวฝาแฝดสองคนคือ น.ส.ธัญญา และ น.ส.นิฏฐา จันทร์โอชา

ประวัติรับราชการ

เริ่มต้นรับราชการที่หน่วย "ทหารเสือราชินี" ( กรมทหารราบที่ 21 รักษาพระองค์ หรือ ร.21 รอ.) ตั้งแต่เป็นผู้บังคับกองพันทหารราบที่ 2 กรมทหารราบที่ 21 รักษาพระองค์ ( ผบ.ร.21 พัน.2 รอ.) เป็นเสนาธิการกรมฯ รองผู้บังคับกรม และขึ้นเป็นผู้บังคับการกรมฯตามลำดับ

ต่อมาย้ายมาเป็น รองผู้บัญชาการกองพลทหารราบที่ 2 รักษาพระองค์ ( พล.ร.2 รอ.) และเป็นผู้บัญชาการกองพลฯ ต่อจากนั้นได้รับตำแหน่งเป็น รองแม่ทัพภาคที่ 1

ในเหตุการณ์รัฐประหารโดยคณะปฏิรูปการปกครองในระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์ทรงเป็นประมุข หรือ คปค. เมื่อวันที่ 19 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2549 ที่มีพลเอกสนธิ บุญยรัตกลินเป็นหัวหน้าคณะ พลตรีประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา (ยศในขณะนั้น) ก็เป็นผู้หนึ่งที่มีบทบาทสำคัญในการยึดอำนาจด้วยรับคำสั่งตรงจาก พลโทอนุพงษ์ เผ่าจินดา แม่ทัพภาคที่ 1 (ยศและตำแหน่งในขณะนั้น)

พล.อ.ประยุทธ์ ได้รับตำแหน่งเป็น รองหัวหน้าผู้รับผิดชอบในการแก้ไขสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉิน ระหว่างวันที่ 2 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2551 ถึง 14 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2551 และได้รับแต่งตั้งเป็น หัวหน้าผู้รับผิดชอบในการแก้ไขสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉิน ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2553 ถึง 22 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2553

2 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2553 พล.อ.ประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา ได้รับพระบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าฯ แต่งตั้งให้เป็น ผู้บัญชาการทหารบก ต่อจาก พล.อ.อนุพงษ์ เผ่าจินดา ที่เกษียณอายุราชการในเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2553 ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2553 เป็นต้นไป
