"ประเพณี" คือ แบบแผนของความเชื่อที่ส่งผลต่อการกระทำ ค่านิยม ทัศนคติ ศีลธรรม จารีต ระเบียบแบบแผน ตลอดจนการประกอบพิธีกรรมต่างๆ ที่เห็นว่าดีงาม ถูกต้อง หรือเป็นที่ยอมรับของคนส่วนใหญ่ในสังคม และมีการปฏิบัติสืบต่อกันมาหรือส่งผลมาถึงทุกวันนี้ หรืออาจจะกล่าวได้ว่าประเพณีคือ สิ่งที่สังคมเดิมสร้างขึ้น แล้วส่งต่อเป็นมรดกให้กับคนรุ่นหลังยึดถือเป็นแนวทางปฏิบัติ และปรับปรุงให้ดีขึ้น และเผยแพร่ออกไปสู่สังคมอื่นๆ ด้วย
