จากความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจในภูมิภาค ได้พัฒนามาเป็นความตกลงเขตการค้าเสรี และกำลังพัฒนาต่อไปเป็นประชาคมอาเซียนในอีก 3 ปีข้างหน้า ซึ่งจะเน้นในการพัฒนา 3 ด้านด้วยกัน คือ ประชาคมด้านการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน และประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน
