2.1 ประวัติความเป็นมา

วัดพระธาตุช่อแฮ เป็นปูชนียสถานอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์คู่บ้านคู่เมืองแพร่ ตามตำนานกล่าวว่าสร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 1879-1881 ในสมัยพระมหาธรรมราชาธิราช (ลิไท) ยังทรงเป็นพระมหาอุปราชซึ่งครองเมืองศรีสัชนาลัย (สวรรคโลก) อยู่ในครั้งนั้น ทรงโปรดให้สร้างสถานที่ทางศาสนา ที่ปรากฏในพุทธประวัติในที่ต่าง ๆ และเลือกยอดดอยโกสิยธชัคคะ เพื่อเป็นที่สร้างพระเจดีย์พระธาตุช่อแฮ

จนกระทั่งราชวงศ์นี้หมดอำนาจลง พระธาตุช่อแฮก็ทรุดโทรมเป็นอันมากจนล่วงมาถึง พ.ศ. 2467 พระครูบาศรีวิชัย (หรือตุ๊เจ้าวัดบ้านปางจังหวัดลำพูน) ได้เป็นประธานบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์ระธาตุร่วมกับคณะสงฆ์จังหวัดแพร่ และมีพระมหาเมธังกร (พรหม พรหมเทโว) อดีตเจ้าคณะจังหวัดแพร่ เป็นประธานฝ่ายสงฆ์ในการบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ จนทำให้พระธาตุช่อแฮกลับมามีความงดงาม และเป็นแหล่งเชิดหน้าชูตาของจังหวัดแพร่ และเป็นแหล่งเชิดหน้าชูตาของจังหวัดแพร่
วัดพระธาตุช่อแฮได้รับการแต่งตั้งเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นตรี ชนิดสามัญ เมื่อวันที่ 23 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2549
