Today, penicillin is prescribed to patients with bacterial infections. Some infections, such as pneumonia, acute pharyngitis, meningitis, syphilis and gonorrhea, can still be cured with penicillin. It is also used to prevent infections of the oral cavity. As a decent and skilful antibiotic, penicillin kills the bacterium and prevents its further development and reproduction by attacking enzymes that build the cell walls of bacteria.

Penicillin also prevents bacteria from synthesizing peptidoglycan, a molecule in the cell wall that provides enough forces for its survival in the human body. The drug weakens the cell walls and the bacterium dies.

Although Fleming was the first to discover penicillin as a separate substance, only Flori and Cheyne made it a drug useful to humanity. Fleming and Flory were knighted in 1944. All three (Fleming, Florey, and Cheyne) received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
