ยิ่งไปกว่านั้นจีนยังเป็นประเทศคู่เจรจาประเทศแรกที่เสนอให้มีการจัดตั้งเขตการค้าเสรีกับอาเซียนโดยทั้งฝั่งของอาเซียนและจีนได้มีการลงนามในกรอบความตกลงเกี่ยวกับความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน-จีน (ASEAN-China Framework Agreement on Economic cooperation ) โดยเมื่อปีพ.ศ.2545 ได้มีการวางเป้าหมายให้จัดตั้งเขตการค้าเสรีอาเซียน-จีนกับสมาชิกอาเซียนเก่า6ประเทศ (ไทย มาเลเซีย อินโดนีเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ บรูไน) ภายในปี2553 และกับประเทศสมาชิกใหม่อีก4ประเทศ (เวียดนาม ลาว พม่า กัมพูชา) ภายในปี2558 โดยอาเซียนกับจีนได้ลงนามข้อตกลงด้านการค้าสินค้าในปีพ.ศ.2547 ,ข้อตกลงด้านการค้าบริการในปีพ.ศ.2550 และข้อตกลงด้านการลงทุนในปีพ.ศ.2552
