ชะนีมงกุฏมีรูปร่างใกล้เคียงกับชะนีธรรมดา หนัก 8 กิโลกรัม แต่ข้อแตกต่างที่เห็นได้ชัดคือ ขนบริเวณกระหม่อมจะยาวและหยาบ จนดูแบนเป็นวงคล้ายสวมมงกุฎ ตัวผู้และตัวเมียสีต่างกัน ตัวผู้สีดำปลอดทั้งตัว ขนกระหม่อมมีวงสีขาวครอบ ตัวเมียสีขาวอมเทาหรือเหลือง ส่วนหน้าอกและกระหม่อมสีดำ

ชะนีมงกุฎอาศัยอยู่ในป่าดิบ และป่าเบญจพรรณ พบในตะวันออกของประเทศไทย ตะวันตกของกัมพูชา และตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของลาว หากินบนต้นไม้เวลากลางวัน กินผลไม้เป็นอาหารหลัก กินใบไม้บ้าง บางครั้งอาจกินสัตว์เล็ก ๆ ด้วย
