งานประเพณีเล่นไฟลอยกระทง จ. สุโขทัย เกิดจากการตีความของนักประวัติศาสตร์จากหลักฐานในศิลาจารึก จนได้ความว่าในสมัยพระยาเลอไทย (ครองราชย์ พ.ศ. 1841 ถึงปีใดไม่ปรากฏ) ชาวอาณาจักรสุโขทัยนิยมเผาเทียนเล่นไฟในช่วงหลังออกพรรษา และมีประเพณีลอยพระประทีปด้วย ท้าวศรีจุฬาลักษณ์เป็นผู้ประดิษฐ์กระทงขึ้นและตามประทีปบนกระทงนั้นแล้วลอยไปเพื่อบูชารอยพระพุทธบาท

ปัจจุบันการเผาเทียนเล่นไฟและลอยพระประทีปได้กลายเป็นประเพณีเล่นไฟลอยกระทงในคืนวันเพ็ญเดือน 12 (ราวเดือน พ.ย.) โดยจัดขึ้นในอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย มีการจุดไฟส่องสว่าง ลอยโคม จุดพลุ เล่นดอกไม้ไฟ ตลอดจนการแสดงแสงสีเสียงจำลองเหตุการณ์ประวัติศาสตร์สมัยสุโขทัย
