กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ เกิดวันที่ 31 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2448 เป็นชาวกรุงเทพฯ ครอบครัวของเขาเป็นครอบครัวยากจน
เมื่อเขามีอายุได้สี่ขวบ เขาได้เริ่มต้นเรียนหนังสือครั้งแรกที่โรงเรียนวัดหัวลำโพง เมื่อจบชั้นประถม 4 กุหลาบได้เข้าเรียนต่อที่ โรงเรียนทหารเด็ก ของกรมหลวงนครราชสีมา เขาได้เรียนอยู่ที่โรงเรียนนี้สองปี และได้ออกจากโรงเรียนทหารเด็ก ให้มาอยู่ที่โรงเรียนเทพศิรินทร์ โดยเริ่มต้นเรียนในชั้นมัธยม 2 และได้เรียนเรื่อยมาจนจบชั้นมัธยม 8 เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2468

พ.ศ. 2468 อายุ 20 ปี เขาได้เข้าทำงานที่กรมยุทธศึกษาฯ โดยเป็นผู้ช่วยบรรณาธิการหนังสือพิมพ์ เสนาศึกษาและแผ่วิทยาศาสตร์ โดยมีตำแหน่งเป็น "เจ้าพนักงานโรงวิทยาศาสตร์"
พ.ศ. 2469 อายุ 21 ปี เริ่มเขียนงานประพันธ์อีกหลายชิ้น ได้ ขณะเดียวกันก็ได้ไปช่วยเพื่อนทำหนังสือพิมพ์ ธงไทย รายสัปดาห์ และหนังสือพิมพ์ ข่าวสด
กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์ได้เบนชีวิตหันมาประกอบอาชีพนักเขียน นักหนังสือพิมพ์โดยอิสระเพียงอย่างเดียว โดยเป็นหนึ่งในคณะสุภาพบุรุษ
วันที่ ๑๐ พฤศจิกายน ปี ๒๔๙๕ กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์จึงถูกจับกุม พร้อมด้วยมิตรสหายในข้อหากบฏภายในและภายนอกราชอาณาจักร หรือ "กบฎสันติภาพ" เพราะการเรียกร้องสันติภาพ และการแจกสิ่งของช่วยเหลือชาวบ้าน และได้รับนิรโทษกรรมใน พ.ศ. 2500 ในช่วงปลายชีวิตได้ลี้ภัยไปอยู่ที่สาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน และเสียชีวิต เมื่อวันที่ 16 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2517
