ประวัติศาสตร์

อำเภอบางบัวทอง ตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2445 มีเขตปกครองกว้างขวาง อยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกของจังหวัดนนทบุรี ที่ว่าการอำเภอตั้งอยู่ที่บริเวณริมคลองบางบัวทอง ตรงข้ามปากคลองพระพิมล นายอำเภอคนแรกคือ หลวงพิธีผดุงชน
ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2460 ได้ย้ายที่ว่าการอำเภอไปตั้งที่ถนนบางกรวย-ไทรน้อย ตำบลโสนลอย และในปีเดียวกัน ทางราชการได้แยกตำบลบางแม่นาง เสาธงหิน และบ้านใหม่ออกไปรวมกับพื้นที่บางส่วนของอำเภอบางใหญ่ (ปัจจุบันคืออำเภอบางกรวย) ตั้งเป็น "กิ่งอำเภอบางแม่นาง" และในเวลาต่อมาได้ตั้งเป็นอำเภอบางแม่นาง (ปัจจุบันคืออำเภอบางใหญ่) และในปี พ.ศ. 2463 กระทรวงนครบาลได้เปลี่ยนชื่อตำบลบางบัวทองเป็นตำบลอ้อมเกร็ด เปลี่ยนชื่อตำบลพระพิมลเป็นตำบลบางบัวทอง และให้โอนตำบลอ้อมเกร็ดและบางพลับไปขึ้นอยู่กับอำเภอปากเกร็ด
จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2486 ขณะนั้นประเทศไทยเกิดปัญหาสภาวะเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำ ทางราชการจึงยุบจังหวัดนนทบุรีลงโดยโอนอำเภอบางบัวทองไปขึ้นกับจังหวัดธนบุรี แต่ภายหลังก็โอนกลับมาอยู่ในการปกครองของจังหวัดนนทบุรีที่ได้รับการยกฐานะขึ้นมาอีกครั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2489
ปี พ.ศ. 2490 มีประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทยเปลี่ยนแปลงเขตตำบลเดิมและตั้งตำบลใหม่ โดยแบ่งพื้นที่บางส่วนจากตำบลลำโพตั้งเป็นตำบลละหาร และแบ่งพื้นที่บางส่วนจากตำบลหนองเพรางายตั้งเป็นตำบลบางคูรัด ส่วนในปีต่อมา ทางราชการก็ได้รวมตำบลไทรน้อย ไทรใหญ่ หนองเพรางาย และราษฎร์นิยมจัดตั้งเป็น "กิ่งอำเภอไทรน้อย" (ภายหลังยกฐานะเป็นอำเภอไทรน้อย)
ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2523 กระทรวงมหาดไทยได้แบ่งพื้นที่บางส่วนของตำบลบางบัวทองจัดตั้งเป็นตำบลพิมลราช และในปี พ.ศ. 2529 แบ่งพื้นที่ด้านทิศตะวันตกของตำบลบางรักใหญ่จัดตั้งเป็นตำบลบางรักพัฒนาท้องที่อำเภอบางบัวทองจึงประกอบด้วย 8 ตำบลจนถึงปัจจุบัน
