ตามหลักพระพุทธศาสนาถือว่าสิ่งทุกอย่างย่อมเกิดมาเหตุ ปัญญาเองก็เช่นเดียวกันจะต้องเกิดมาจากเหตุอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง ดังพุทธภาษิตที่ว่า โยคา เว ชายะติ ภูริ แปลว่า ปัญญาจะเกิดขึ้นได้ต้องมีการกระทำให้เกิดขึ้น ซึ่งเหตุที่จะให้เกิดปัญญานั้นมี 3 ประการด้วยกันคือ สุตมยปัญญา คือ ปัญญาที่เกิดจากการฟัง จินตามยปัญญา คือ ปัญญาที่เกิดจากการคิดค้น และภาวนามยปัญญา คือ ปัญญาที่เกิดจากการอบรมฝึกฝนในบทเรียนนี้จะนำมาศึกษาเฉพาะเรื่อง จินตามยปัญญา หรือปัญญาเกิดจากการคิดค้น กล่าวคือ บุคคลบางคนไม่ได้ร่ำเรียนวิชาอะไรจากผู้อื่น ไม่ได้อ่านตำราหรืออ่านหนังสือใด ๆ ทั้งไม่ได้ฟังการพูดการบรรยายวิชาการจากที่ไหนมาก่อนเลย แต่บุคคลนั้นได้ทำปัญญาความรอบรู้ของตนให้เกิดขึ้น โดยวิธีคิดหรือค้นคว้าในใจ คิดหาเหตุผลใดเรื่องเรื่องหนึ่งจนเกิดปัญญารอบรู้อย่างชัดเจนในเรื่องนั้น ๆ เช่นเดียวกับนักวิทยาศาสตร์ได้ทดลองค้นพบกฎและสสารต่าง ๆ ซึ่งยังไม่มีใครพบมาก่อน หรือเกษตรกรได้คิดค้นสิ่งประดิษฐ์ใหม่ ๆ ออกมาใช้ในการเกษตร หรือแพทย์ได้คิดค้นพบเชื้อโรคชนิดใหม่พร้อมทั้งรู้วิธีการรักษาใหม่ ๆ เป็นต้น
ปัญญาชนิดนี้ พระพุทธศาสนาเรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งว่า โยนิโสมนสิการ คือการกระทำไว้ในใจโดยอุบายอันแยบคาย ได้แก่ การใช้ความคิดอย่างถูกวิธี การมองเห็น สิ่งต่าง ๆ แล้วนำมาพินิจพิจารณาค้นคว้าสืบหาเหตุผลในสิ่งนั้นให้ตลอดสาย หรือบางทีก็นำไปแยกแยะทำการวิเคราะห์ด้วยความคิดย่างมีระเบียบ จนสามารถเข้าใจและเห็นแจ้งประจักษ์ในสิ่งนั้น ๆ ตามความเป็นจริง
