ศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทย ตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านทุ่งเกวียน ต.เวียงตาล อยู่ในความดูแลของฝ่ายอุตสาหกรรมป่าไม้ภาคเหนือ
องค์การอุตสาหกรรมป่าไม้ (ออป.) แต่เดิม ออป. เป็นศูนย์ฝึกลูกช้างซึ่งเป็นแห่งแรกและแห่งเดียวในโลก โดยเริ่มดำเนินการมาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2512 เป็นสถานที่เลี้ยงและฝึกลูกช้างเพื่อให้เชื่อฟังคำสั่งและมีความชำนาญในการทำไม้ขณะที่แม่ช้างไปทำงานในป่า และเนื่องจากมีนโยบายปิดป่าซึ่งทำให้ช้างต้องว่างงาน ศูนย์ฝึกลูกช้างจึงถูกปรับมาเป็นสถานที่ดูแลช้างแก่และเจ็บป่วย และที่นี่ยังเป็นสถานที่ตั้งของโรงพยาบาลช้างด้วย ออป.จึงได้ก่อตั้งศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทยขึ้นเมื่อเดือนมกราคม พ.ศ. 2535 และจัดกิจกรรมเพื่อการท่องเที่ยว ได้แก่

การแสดงของช้าง ซึ่งยังคงอนุรักษ์ศิลปะการทำไม้ซึ่งใช้ช้างเป็นพาหนะ และแรงงานที่สำคัญ ในการชักลากไม้ที่ได้จัดแสดงให้นักท่องเที่ยวทั้งคนไทยและต่างประเทศได้ชม เวลาในการแสดง
วันจันทร์ - ศุกร์ มีการแสดง 2 รอบ ในเวลา 10.00 น . และ 11.00 น .
วันเสาร์ - อาทิตย์ และวันหยุดต่างๆ จะเพิ่มรอบการแสดงในเวลา 13.30 น .

ศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทยได้รับรางวัลอุตสาหกรรมท่องเที่ยว (Tourism Awards) ประเภทรางวัลดีเด่นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาติ พ.ศ.2541 ปัจจุบันศูนย์ฯมีโครงการ โรงเรียนฝึกควาญช้าง เพื่อฝึกควาญหรือผู้ที่ประสงค์จะเป็นควาญให้สามารถดูแลช้างได้อย่างถูกต้อง มีชาวต่างชาติให้ความสนใจมาสมัครเป็นนักเรียนหลายคน นอกจากเรื่องท่องเที่ยวแล้วยังมีสิ่งที่น่าสนใจ คือ พลังงานที่ใช้ภายในศูนย์ฯ มาจากพลังงานทดแทนในโครงการเฉลิมพระเกียรติฯ มีก๊าซชีวภาพจากมูลช้างใช้ในการหุงต้ม และกระแสไฟฟ้าผลิตจากเซลล์แสงอาทิตย์

สวนป่าทุ่งเกวียน เป็นสถานที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจของชาวลำปาง มีป่าสนเมืองหนาวและพันธุ์ไม้นานาชนิด ทั้งไม้ดอก ไม้ใบที่มีสีสันสวยงาม อีกทั้งไม้จำพวกตะบองเพชร และปาล์ม ตลอดจนพืชสมุนไพรต่างๆ นักท่องเที่ยวสามารถแค้มปิ้งที่นี่ได้ ช่วงที่สวยที่สุดเหมาะแก่การพักแรมคือเดือนพฤศจิกายน ซึ่งเป็นช่วงที่ดอกบัวตองกำลังบาน เนื่องจากจังหวัดลำปางมีพื้นที่เป็นแอ่งกะทะจึงมีอากาศที่ร้อนกว่าแม่ฮ่องสอน ดอกบัวตองที่ลำปางจึงบานเร็วกว่าที่ดอยแม่อูคอประมาณ 15 วัน
ประมาณเดือนตุลาคมมีการจัดกิจกรรมทุ่งเกวียนเมาเท่นไบค์ และเดือนธันวาคมของทุกปี จะมีการจัดงาน “ดอกไม้บานวันพบช้าง”

ศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทย เริ่มก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อสิบปีก่อนที่ อ.งาว ด้วยวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อฝึกช้างให้ออกไปทำงานด้านชักลากไม้ในป่า แต่ช่วงยี่สิบปีถัดมา รัฐได้ยกเลิกสัมปทานการทำป่าไม้ทั่วประเทศ ทำให้ช้างต่าง ๆ ไม่มีที่อยู่ที่ทำงาน และถูกส่งกลับมาอยู่ที่โรงเรียนฝึกช้าง แต่พื้นที่ที่มีอยู่ไม่สามารถรองรับจำนวนช้างทั้งหมดได้ จึงได้ย้ายสถานที่มาอยู่ที่ อ.ห้างฉัตรในปัจจุบัน
ศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทย มีพื้นที่กว้างขวางจากบริเวณด้านหน้าของศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทย มีรถบริการนำเข้าสู่ส่วนการแสดงต่าง ๆ ภายใน ปัจจุบันแบ่งพื้นที่เป็น
-โรงพยาบาลช้าง คอยรักษาดูแลอาการช้างที่ป่วย และลูกช้างที่คลอดใหม่
-โรงงานทำกระดาษจากมูลช้าง จำหน่าย และเพิ่มมูลค่าด้วยการทำเป็นกระดาษเขียนจดมาย,ซองจดหมาย,สมุดโน้ต และอื่น ๆ อีก โรงงานผลิตกระดาษจากมูลช้างเปิดให้เข้าชมวิธีทำกระดาษจากมูลช้างด้วย
-โรงงานทำปุ๋ยชีวภาพจากมูลช้าง และโรงงานแก๊สชีวภาพนำไปผลิตไฟฟ้าใช้ภายในศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทย(ครบวงจรทีเดียว)
-โรงช้างต้น (ส่วนนี้ไม่ได้เปิดให้เข้าชม)
-และส่วนที่ขาดไม่ได้คือ ลานแสดงช้าง
