ประเพณีสงกรานต์ของประเทศไทย ประเทศลาวและประเทศกัมพูชานั้นมี3วัน ซึ่งอยู่ในช่วงต้นฤดูเก็บเกี่ยว ประเทศไทยจะจัดช่วงวันที่13-15 เมษายน แต่ประเทศลาวและประเทศกัมพูชาจะจัดช่วงวันที่14-16 เมษายน
วันแรกถือเป็นวันมหาสงกรานต์หรือวันปีใหม่ ตามธรรมเนียมปฏิบัติดั้งเดิมนั้นมีการแบ่งกิจกรรมของแต่ละวันไว้ว่า วันแรกเป็นวันแห่งการทำบุญตักบาตร มีการขนทรายเข้าวัดเพื่อเตรียมก่อเจดีย์
วันที่สองเป็นวันครอบครัวที่ลูกๆจะอยู่กับพ่อแม่อาจจะมีการให้เงินหรือซื้อเสื้อผ้าใหม่ให้เป็นของขวัญ ส่วนในช่วงหัวค่ำจะช่วยกันก่อเจดีย์ทราย และวันที่สามก็จะมีการละเล่นรื่นเริงต่างๆจากนั้นก็จะมีการสรงน้ำพระพุทธรูป และรดน้ำดำหัวญาติผู้ใหญ่ในครอบครัวเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล
