นิทาน (บาลี: นิทาน, อังกฤษ: Fable) ในภาษาไทย มีใช้อย่างน้อย ๒ ความหมาย คือ

2.นิทาน (บาลี) เป็นเรื่องต้นเหตุของเหตุการณ์ในปัจจุบัน เช่น เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ ก็จัดเป็นอวิทูเรนิทานของพระพุทธเจ้า เพราะเจ้าชายสิทธัตธะเป็นเรื่องต้นเหตุของเหตุการณ์ที่พระพุทธเจ้าได้ตรัสรู้ ถ้าไม่มีเจ้าชายสิทธัตธะที่ออกบวช พระพุทธเจ้าพระนามว่าโคดมก็มีไม่ได้ เป็นต้น
