ความสำคัญ

คำว่า เทโว ย่อมาจาก เทโวโรหณะ หมายถึง การหยั่งลงมาจากเทวโลก ซึ่งหมายถึงพระพุทธองค์เสด็จลงมาจากเทวโลกตามตำนานเล่าว่าเมื่อครั้งพระพุทธเจ้าได้ประกาศพระศาสนาตั้งแต่ตอนเหนือของประเทศอินเดียมาถึงตอนล่าง และได้เสด็จไปยังกรุงกบิลพัสดุ์ ซึ่งเป็นปิตุภูมิ ได้ทรงแสดงเทศนาโปรดพระบิดา พระมารดา พระนางพิมพาและพระราหุล ตลอดจนพระประยูรญาติทั้งหลาย แล้วได้เสด็จขึ้นไปยังสวรรค์ชั้นดุสิต เพื่อทรงแสดงธรรมเทศนาพระอภิธรรมแด่พระพุทธมารดาและปวงเทวดาทั้งหลายตลอดพรรษา จึงเสด็จมายังมนุษย์โลกในวันที่เสด็จกลับมานั้นมีประชาชนไปถวายการต้อนรับพระองค์เป็นจำนวนมาก ประชาชนเหล่านั้นต่างปิติยินดีด้วยการนำจตุปัจจัยใส่บาตร
ประเพณีตักบาตรเทโวของสุโขทัย มีการจัดงานประเพณีตักบาตรเทโวหลายแห่งเท่าที่ปรากฏและมีชื่อเสียงคือ งานตักบาตรเทโวของวัดราชธานี อำเภอเมืองสุโขทัย และวัดน้ำขุม อำเภอศรีนคร จังหวัดสุโขทัย วัดราชธานีมีการจัดงานตักบาตรเทโวมาแล้วไม่ต่ำกว่า ๔๐ ปี มีการทำบุญตักบาตร ใส่บาตรข้าวต้มมัด หรือข้าวต้มลูกโยน เพราะความเชื่อที่ว่าพระพุทธองค์เสด็จลงมาจากเทวโลกมีผู้มาต้อนรับมากมายทำให้ไม่สามารถเข้าใกล้พระพุทธองค์ได้ ต้องโยนอาหารลงในบาตร มีกีฬาทางน้ำคือการแข่งเรือในแม่น้ำยม โดยเชิญเรือจากหลายแหล่งมาร่วมแข่งขันบางปีได้เชิญเรือจากต่างจังหวัดมาร่วมแข่งด้วย
สำหรับการงานประเพณีตักบาตรเทโวของวัดน้ำขุม ได้เริ่มขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๒ โดยมีครูย่อม จันทร์สุข เป็นผู้นำและร่วมกับศรัทธาชาวบ้านจัดทำ บุษบก ศีรษะพระอินทร์ พระพรหม พระอิศวร ยมบาล และหัวสัตว์นรกต่าง ๆ เช่น เปรต สุนัข ลิง ฯลฯ ตลอดจนเครื่อง แต่งกายนางฟ้า เทวดา เป็นต้น
การจัดทำอุปกรณ์จัดงานตักบาตรเทโวในวัดน้ำขุมนั้น เป็นงานศิลปะที่เกิดจาภูมิปัญญาชาวบ้านในส่วนท้องถิ่นล้วน ๆ เพราะชาวบ้านได้ช่วยกันประดิษฐ์ไปตามจินตนาการ แม้ในปัจจุบันรูปแบบก็ยังจัดในรูปแบบเดิม แต่มีอุปกรณ์เพิ่มขึ้นมากกว่าเดิม
