อ่าวหะล็องได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นมรดกโลกในการประชุมคณะกรรมการมรดกโลกสมัยสามัญครั้งที่ 18 เมื่อวันที่ 17 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2537 ที่ภูเก็ต ประเทศไทย ด้วยข้อกำหนดและหลักเกณฑ์ในการพิจารณา ดังนี้
(vii) - เป็นตัวอย่างที่เด่นชัดของการเป็นตัวแทนในวิวัฒนาการสำคัญต่างๆในอดีตของโลก เช่น ยุคสัตว์เลื้อยคลาน ยุคน้ำแข็ง ซึ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงการพัฒนาความหลากหลายทางธรรมชาติบนพื้นโลก
(ix) - เป็นแหล่งที่เกิดจากปรากฏการณ์ทางธรรมชาติที่มีเอกลักษณ์หายากหรือสวยงามเป็นพิเศษ เช่น แม่น้ำ น้ำตก ภูเขาด้วยความสวยงามและความสมบูรณ์ทางธรรมชาติของอ่าวฮาลอง ทำให้ที่นี่ได้รับการประกาศเป็นมรดกโลกทางธรรมชาติ จากองค์กรยูเนสโกในปี 2537 การเดินทางไปยังอ่าวฮาลอง จากฮานอยมีรถบัสไปยังเมืองฮาลอง ซึ่งห่างออกไป 160 กิโลเมตร ใช้เวลาประมาณ 3 ชั่วโมงครึ่ง และจากสถานีรถบัสไปยังท่าเรืออ่าวฮาลองอีก 15 นาที จากนั้นไปต่อเรือที่ท่าเรือเฟอรี่ ซึ่งจะมีเรือไปยังเกาะกัดบา หรือจากฮานอยนั่งรถลงมาที่จังหวัดไฮฟอง จากสถานีรถบัสไปท่าเรือใช่เวลา 10 นาที มีเรือไฮโดรฟรอยไปยังเกาะกัดบา ใช้เวลาประมาณ 2 ชั่วโมง
