ด้าน นายสุชาติ จริยาเลิศศักดิ์ รองผู้อำนวยการ รักษาราชการแทนผู้อำนวยการ องค์การส่งเสริมกิจการโคนมแห่งประเทศไทย (อ.ส.ค.) กล่าวว่า เพื่อแก้ปัญหาการขาดสารอาหารในเด็ก เนื่องจากนมเป็นอาหารที่มีคุณค่าทางโภชนาการสูง เมื่อเด็กนักเรียนได้ดื่ม จะทำให้เกิดการพัฒนาทั้งทางร่างกายและสติปัญญาอย่างครบถ้วน อันจะเป็นพื้นฐานในการพัฒนาประเทศชาติ และสนับสนุนการใช้น้ำนมดิบในโครงการส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงโคนมของรัฐบาล รัฐบาลจึงได้จัดตั้งโครงการอาหารเสริม (นม) โรงเรียนขึ้นตั้งแต่ ปี พ.ศ. 2535 ซึ่งนอกจากช่วยแก้ปัญหาภาวะโภชนาการในเด็กแล้ว ยังแก้ปัญหาน้ำนมดิบล้นตลาดของเกษตรกรได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
ขณะที่ รัฐบาลได้จัดให้เด็กนักเรียน ตั้งแต่ระดับเตรียมประถมจนถึงชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 6 ดื่มนมโรงเรียนเทอมละ 130 วัน สามารถรองรับน้ำนมดิบของเกษตรกรได้วันละ 1,200 ตัน จากน้ำนมดิบที่ผลิตได้ทั่วประเทศถึง 2,800 ตัน/วัน นมโรงเรียนได้กระจายไปยังโรงเรียนต่างๆ กว่า 40,000 โรงเรียนทั่วประเทศ เด็กนักเรียนกว่า 7,600,000 คน โดยได้จัดสรรสิทธิการจำหน่ายนมให้กับผู้ประกอบการ จำนวน 77 ราย รวมงบประมาณ 6,819.13 ล้านบาท ภายใต้ระบบการทำ MOU น้ำนมดิบกับเกษตรกรผู้เลี้ยงโคนม
สำหรับวันดื่มนมโรงเรียนโลก จัดขึ้นครั้งแรกในเดือนกันยายน ปี ค.ศ. 2000 และได้จัดต่อเนื่องเป็นประจำทุกปีในแต่ละประเทศทั่วโลก สำหรับ วันดื่มนมโรงเรียนโลก ในปีนี้ ตรงกับวันพุธที่ 30 กันยายน โดยในปีนี้ นับเป็นครั้งที่ 16 ที่ได้มีการจัดกิจกรรมวันดื่มนมโรงเรียนโลกขึ้นมา นอกจากประเทศไทยแล้ว ยังมีมากกว่า 40 ประเทศทั่วโลก อาทิ จีน อิหร่าน อินเดีย อินโดนีเซีย จาเมกา ปากีสถาน ซาอุดีอาระเบีย แทนซาเนีย ต่างก็จัดกิจกรรมนี้ขึ้น เพื่อแสดงถึงความสำคัญของโครงการนมโรงเรียนในระดับโลกกันอย่างพร้อมเพรียง
