สมาร์ตการ์ด แบ่งเป็น 2 ประเภทคือ

สมาร์ตการ์ดแบบสัมผัส (contact smart card) ตัวบัตรมีการฝังชิปใต้หน้าสัมผัสที่เป็นแผ่นโลหะสีทองขนาดเล็ก เส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางประมาณครึ่งนิ้วไว้ที่ด้านหน้าของบัตร ตอนใช้งานต้องสอดบัตรเข้าในเครื่องอ่านให้หน้าสัมผัสของบัตรได้แตะกับหน้าสัมผัสภายในเครื่องอ่านบัตร ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นกับบัตรเครดิตหรือบัตรเอทีเอ็ม ปัจจุบันประเทศไทยได้ใช้สมาร์ตการ์ดชนิดนี้ทำบัตรประจำตัวประชาชนหรือซิมการ์ดของโทรศัพท์มือถือ ปัจจุบันมีการทำบัตรเครดิตที่เป็นสมาร์ทการ์ดแบบสัมผัสด้วยเป็นบัตรวีซ่า pay wave เช่น บัตรบลูการ์ด
