จังหวัดภูเก็ตในอดีตเจ้าถิ่นเดิม ได้แก่ เงาะซาไก และชาวน้ำ (ชาวเล หรือ ชาวไทยใหม่) ต่อมาได้มีชาวอินเดีย ชาวไทย และชาวจีน ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวจีนฮกเกี้ยนอพยพเข้ามา สำหรับชาวไทยได้มีการอพยพเข้ามาอาศัยมากขึ้น ทำให้สามารถยึดครองภูเก็ตได้มากกว่าชาติอื่น และในที่สุดชาวไทยที่อาศัยอยู่ก็ได้นำเอาวัฒนธรรมของชาติต่างๆ มาปรับปรุงและดัดแปลง จนกระทั่งกลายเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของชาวภูเก็ตสืบเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
