ในระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2526-2528 รัฐ บาลมอบหมายให้กรมโยธาธิการ กระทรวงมหาดไทย สร้างถนนและสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา
ช่วงจากแยกแคลายต่อจากถนนงามวงศ์วานไปทางทิศตะวัน ตกผ่านพื้นที่ของเขตอำเภอเมืองนนทบุรี อำเภอบางบัวทอง
ไปจดถนนวงแหวนรอบนอกที่ตำบลเสาธงหิน อำเภอบางใหญ่ รวมระยะทาง 12. 5 กิโลเมตร ถนนนี้มีสะพานสำคัญข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา
ซึ่งนายสุกิจ จุลละนันท์ ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดนนทบุรี ได้พิจารณาเห็นว่าสะพานที่อยู่ใกล้แม่น้ำนิวาสสถานเดิมของสมเด็จพระศรีสุลาลัย พระราชชนนีพันปีหลวง ซึ่งเป็นพระราชมารดาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวและอยู่ใกล้วัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติ ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าฯ
ทรงริเริ่มก่อสร้างเป็นอนุสรณ์เฉลิมพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระศรีสุลาลัย พระราชชนนีพันปีหลวง รวมตลอดถึงพระอัยกา พระอัยกี ของพระองค์
เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมพระเกียรติให้สูงส่งและเด่นชัดยิ่งขึ้น และเพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์แห่งพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว
จึงได้เสนอขอขนานนามสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาที่สร้างขึ้นใหม่นี้ว่า " สะพานพระนั่งเกล้า" โดยได้เสนอขอพระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตผ่านทางกระทรวงมหาดไทยและคณะรัฐมนตรีขออัญเชิญพระนามสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้า เจ้าอยู่หัวมาเป็นชื่อสะพานเพื่อเป็นสิริมงคล
และเป็นเกียรติแก่ชาวไทยจังหวัดนนทบุรี พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานชื่อสะพานแห่งนี้ว่า
"สะพานพระนั่งเกล้า"
