.................วัดอรุณราชวราราม เป็นวัดโบราณมีมาแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยายังเป็นราชธานี มีชื่อเรียกเดิมว่า วัดมะกอก สมัยกรุงธนบุรีสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุร ีทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ปฏิสังขรณ์ แล้วเปลี่ยนชื่อใหม่เป็น วัดแจ้ง สาเหตุที่เปลี่ยนชื่อวัดจากวัดมะกอกมาเป็นวัดแจ้งก็เพราะว่า เมื่อสมัยที่พระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรี

มอบหน้าที่ให้บำรุงบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์วัดแจ้ง สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากรมหลวงอิศรสุนทร ได้ทรงบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์วัดแจ้งใหม่หมดทั้งวัด แต่การปฏิสังขรณ์ ทำได้สำเร็จเพียงกุฏีสงฆ์ ส่วนพระอุโบสถและพระวิหารยังไม่ทันเสร็จก็สิ้นรัชกาลที่ ๑

บูรณะพระอุโบสถและพระวิหารเก่าหน้าพระปรางค์หน้าวัด กับสร้างศาลาการเปรียญขึ้น ๑ หลัง การปฏิสังขรณ์สิ่งต่าง ๆ สำเร็จเรียบร้อย ก็มีการฉลองและพระราชทานนามวัดนี้ใหม่ว่า วัดอรุณราชวราราม ต่อมา ทรงมีพระราชศรัทธาที่จะสถาปนาพระมหาธาตุหรือพระพุทธปรางค์ข้างหน้าวัด ขึ้นใหม่ให้เป็นที่งามสง่า พระปรางค์เดิมสูงเพียง ๘ วา ทรงพระราชดำริว่าควรจะเสริมสร้างให้ใหญ่สูงเป็นพระมหาธาตุสำหรับพระนคร จึงโปรดให้กำหนดการลงมือขุดคลองรากทำเป็นฐาน แต่การยังไม่สำเร็จก็พอดีสิ้นรัชกาลที่ ๒ เสียก่อน
