สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถสนพระราชหฤทัยในด้านการศึกษา และทรงยึดมั่นในคำสอนของสมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าว่า "ปัญญาทำให้มนุษย์เป็นมนุษย์ที่สมบูรณ์" สติปัญญาเกิดขึ้นได้ด้วยการศึกษาหาความรู้ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งจากการอ่านหนังสือ พระราชกรณียกิจด้านการศึกษานานัปการ

ที่พระราชทานแกพสกนิกรชาวไทยนั้นประกอบด้วย ทรงส่งเสริมการศึกษาในระบบโรงเรียน เช่น พระราชทานทุนการศึกษาแกนักเรียน สร้างโรงเรียน พระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์อุดหนุนโรงเรียน พระราชทานอุปกรณ์การเรียน ทรงรับโรงเรียนไว้ในพระบรมราชินูปถัมภ์ เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเยี่ยมโรงเรียน เป็นต้น ด้านการศึกษานอกโรงเรียน เช่น ทรงสอนหนังสือชาวบ้าน ทรงสร้างศาลาร่วมใจ ทรงส่งเสริมการอาชีวศึกษา ทรงอนุรักษ์ ฟื้นฟู และพัฒนางานศิลปาชีพ นอกจากนี้ ยังทรงส่งเสริมการศึกษาของพระภิกษุสามเณร และทรงรับมูลนิธิแม่ชีไทยไว้ในพระบรมราชินูปถัมภ์ เป็นต้น

ทรงเป็นครูที่ดี
สมเด็จพระนางเจ้า ฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถพระอุปนิสัยรักการอ่านหนังสือมาก ซึ่งเป็นอุปนิสัยที่ได้ถ่ายทอดมายังพระราชโอรสพระราชธิดาทุกพระองค์ นอกจากจะโปรดการอ่านแล้วยังโปรดการเป็นครูด้วย สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดา ฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารีได้ทรงเล่าไว้ในพระราชนิพนธ์ เรื่อง "สมเด็จแม่กับการศึกษา" ว่า สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ โปรดการเป็นครูมาตั้งแต่ทรงพระเยาว์ โดยทรงเล่นเป็นครูและนักเรียนกับเด็กที่บ้าน ทรงมีวิธีการสอนที่สนุก เด็กๆ ในบ้านจึงชอบเป็นลูกศิษย์ของพระองค์ เมื่อพระราชโอรสและพระราชธิดายังทรงพระเยาว์ ทรงสอนให้พับกระดาษ เขียนรูป และทำการฝีมือต่าง ๆ ก่อนเข้าบรรทมทรงอ่านหนังสือหรือทรงเล่านิทานพระราชทาน และทรงซื้อหนังสือพระราชทานด้วย ซึ่งมีทั้งวรรณคดี ภาษาอังกฤษ ประวัติศาสตร์ วัฒนธรรม พุทธศาสนา ฯลฯ

โรงเรียนเจ้าแม่หลวงอุปถัมภ์ ๒ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้า ฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถพระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์จำนวน ๒๐,๐๐๐ บาท เพื่อสร้างอาคารหลังใหม่ให้แก่โรงเรียนชายแดนสงเคราะห์ ๑๔ ของชาวไทยภูเขาเผ่าม้ง ตำบลแม่ริม อำเภอแม่ริม จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ต่อมาเสด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนีเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเปิดอาคารเมื่อ วันที่ ๒๓ กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๐ และพระราชทานนามว่า "โรงเรียนเจ้าแม่หลวงอุปถัมภ์ ๒" พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้า ฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเยี่ยมโรงเรียนนี้หลายครั้ง โรงเรียนได้โอนไปสังกัดกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๓
