นิทานพื้นบ้านลาวนั้นส่วนใหญ่เป็นเรื่องเล่ามาแต่อดีตสืบต่อกันมา เล่าแบบปากต่อปากบ้างหรือเขียนลงในเอกสารบ้าง ในส่วนที่เป็นเอกสารนั้นส่วนใหญ่ได้ถูกทำลายไปในช่วงที่ลาวตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของต่างประเทศและในช่วงสงคราม เมื่อบ้านเมืองสงบภาครัฐจึงได้มีการรวบรวมนิทานต่างๆ มาตีพิมพ์เผยแพร่ให้แก่ประชาชนชาวลาว ด้วยรัฐบาลลาวเล็งเห็นว่านิทานพพื้นบ้านเหล่านี้เป็นมรดกอันล้ำค่าที่แสดงถึงวัฒนธรรมแต่ก่อนเก่าของชาติ แสดงถึงสติปัญญาของบรรพบุรุษลาวในการต่อสู้และแก้ปัญหากับธรรมชาติรอบข้างเพื่อให้ชนรุ่นหลังได้ศึกษา และร่วมอนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมอันดีงามเหล่านี้ต่อไป
นิทานพื้นบ้านลาวมี 5 แบบ ดังนี้
